Distribution and habitat preferences

Inhabits sandy or muddy floors of shallow inlet waters. Usually in large schools among branching corals, seawhip gardens and black coral bushes. (Fishbase)

Behaviour

They usually swim vertically, head-down, to  look like part of the coral. When threatened, they switch to a horizontal position and swim away as a school.
