Distinguishing features

Often confused with Yellowfin Bream. Tarwhine have obvious yellow or gold lines on a silvery body which are absent on Yellowfin Bream and a more rounded head shape.

  • From 0 cm to 26 cm (Total Length) - applies to Immature specimens

Distribution and habitat preferences

Abundant in shallow water and often caught at the surf-line or in rock pools (Fishbase). Main food sources include molluscs and other benthic invertebrates such as crustaceans and worms.
